Log Drums
These beautiful and powerful log drums are lovingly hand-made with all natural materials. They are made from hollowed out cottonwood poplar logs naturally finished with linseed oil or non-toxic varathane so the texture, natural features, and natural colouring of the wood shines through. The hides and most of the lacing are made from bison (buffalo) or moose rawhide naturally tanned without the use of deadening chemicals. This makes for a very alive sound that is always changing, magical, and powerfully resonant.
Each drum has a rawhide skin covering each end with each end having a different tone. You can drum both ends and create a harmonious sound or just drum one end for a more consistent sound. The drums are large enough that many people can drum them at once. ![]() A unique feature of these drums is that each has a sturdy wood handle made from willow and naturally finished. The handle is in the middle of one side of the drum and makes it easy to carry the drum (like a suitcase). Each drum comes with a pair of hand crafted toms, with carraganna branch handles decorated with grouse feathers. The tanned leather ends have a suede side and a leather side so that you can make a harder or softer beat as you desire. The energies of the beings whose parts make up this drum also lend their unique energies to the drums:
Each drum has a spirit of its own and a unique healing purpose. These drums were created in sacred space and are meant to be used for healing, in a very broad sense of the word. They vibrate with energy and await the right steward. Maybe that's you! To order, please contact Laureen Rama at 1-800-491-7738 toll-free in North America or 1-403-851-1198 or info@soulrestore.com. In 1991, as I was starting my career as a shamanic healer and teacher, I went to a conference where a woman brought a truckload of log drums. We drummed them as a group--the men drummed for the women to dance and the women drummed for the men to dance. It was an unforgettably moving experience and I vowed that someday I would have drums like those. A few years later I went to Taos, New Mexico and became the steward of a log drum made by the natives of the Taos Pueblo. In shamanic dreamtime I learned that the drum had a purpose--to balance masculine and feminine energies in whoever heard it played. I also learned where the tree had come from and took the drum to the site to say good-bye. This drum has given me magical experiences, has been a powerful healing and teaching instrument, and is a good friend to me. A few years after that, I realized that cottonwoods grew beside the creek near my home. I prayed that someday if one naturally fell down or blew over in a wind storm, that I could make drums from that tree. Again a few years later while a friend was doing a healing ceremony for me, a strong wind storm came up and one of the most beautiful cottonwoods in the area blew over. A score of friends helped me over a year and a half to cut the tree into lengths, store the logs, hollow them out, finish the wood, prepare the hide and make the drums. Every step of the way we called spirit in to help us and bless the drums as we created them. The drums were consecrated at the Winter Solstice 2000 by a jubilant gathering of my shamanic students, clients, and their friends and families.
Your drum, to be fully alive, needs your tender respect and care. Store it in a place of honour, talk to it, use it with love. The hide of your drum has been naturally tanned without the use of chemicals. This creates the very alive and always changing sound of your drum. The hide and lacing are still living and will continue to tighten and may break if left in dry or hot conditions. Store the hide in a moist place away from heat sources like heat vents or sunlight. Spray the hide and lacing with water once a week if you can't keep the drum in a moist place. You can also store the drum in a plastic bag with a damp rag or sponge if conditions are very dry. When you want to play the drum, if it needs tightening, use a hair dryer to dry out the hide. Keep the heat at a temperature not too hot for your hand and take care not to overheat the hide. |
