Q. How did you get into being a shaman? A. I certainly did not seek to become a shaman. It feels like something a greater force than me has decided I should do and I am happy to follow. I was psychically gifted as a child, and it scared me, so I deliberately put the gift away. I studied shamanism and mental illness at University 20 years ago and was drawn to becoming a medical anthropologist, but could not see how I could make a living at that, so I let it go. At the age of 32, I accidentally went to a workshop on shamanic practice and it was so good for me, I pursued learning more. Then I had a vision that I would be a shaman and I asked for guidance on how to pursue that. Since then I have taken workshops and courses with various teachers and done much learning on my own with my own spirit helpers. For more information see my background. Q. How did you know you had a gift for shamanic healing? A. When I first began shamanic practice, I was part of a group that did shamanic healings for other people every two weeks. In my first healing, my spirit helpers asked me to do a soul retrieval for a woman. I had never heard of this practice. After that, it was usually me and another man who always did the soul retrieval aspect of the healings. Friends started asking me to do healing for them too. It seemed so easy and I enjoyed it so much, I came to realize that this was one of my shamanic gifts. For more information see shamanic healing. Q. I can't travel to the locations of some of your workshops. How can I have these great experiences here? A. You can invite me to your area to do a workshop, course, or retreat. Any of the events listed on this site can be hosted elsewhere. And the create your own event section provides ideas for other events you could host in your area. Q. Are you old enough to be a shaman? A. I'm 40 years old. I attribute my youthful looks partly to all the shamanic practice and healing I've done. I'm following my vision and my calling to do shamanic work for others, so it seems spirit thinks I'm old enough! (maybe because I have led an intense life and packed a lot of life experience into those 40 years). Q. Is Laureen Rama your birth name? A. Yes. Laureen is a relatively new North American name. Rama is of Finnish origin and I love it because it has rich meaning in many languages and cultures. |
